The kids even wrote their own Bernard stories after being asked what might happen if Bernard left the zoo and snored elsewhere.

That's great. I think any illustrator or writer would feel good to know that their book had made such an impact on their audience. Children may be young but if they don't like something, they let you know. If those kids hated your book you wouldn't keep getting those signs of support.
