STAY FUZZY AND HOPEFUL

This is the first painting I did of Bernard. Its painted on some old drawer liner paper from the 40's or 50's. It's also a good mantra.

THE PITCH

When I was first pitching Bernard, I did three finished spreads, two of them I have posted here. In the first draft of the story, Bernard leaves the zoo to find places to nap, like a hotel's rooftop pool. After Robin Tordini and I worked out a second draft we decided to keep all the action inside the zoo.

But some things did stay the same, this other one made it inside and morphed into the cover too.

OTTER POSSE

Here are six new spreads with the new and improved otter posse story angle. Always fun painting those little three wheeled carts you see all over Italy, and when ones been commandeered by otters...thats Fuzzytown Gold!

LOST

Heres a spread that got cut after Kate Farrell and I did some polishing of the story. It's one of my more favorite spreads but it just didn't work with the new ending.

BEFORE AND AFTER

I always like seeing different illustrators sketch processes and seeing how it evolves into the final work. Kind of like the Before and After photos you see of celebrities and their diets or plastic surgery.
Here are a couple sketches and finals from Bernard.

PLUG INS

When I was first pitching Bernard, earplugs were a part of the story and I sent out official Bernard earplugs as swag. This is the label from the package.

COVER STORY

Cleaning out some files I found this alt sketch for the cover of Stop Snoring, Bernard! I think the gorilllas may have to make an appearance in the next Bernard saga.
